Global Health Risk Framework: Workshop Summaries
Since the 2014 Ebola outbreak, many public- and private-sector leaders have seen a need for improved management of global public health emergencies. The effects of the Ebola epidemic go well beyond the three hardest-hit countries and beyond the health sector. Education, child protection, commerce, transportation, and human rights have all suffered.

The Institute of Medicine today awarded the 2014 Rhoda and Bernard Sarnat International Prize in Mental Health to Vikram Patel, professor of international mental health and Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and at the Public Health Foundation of India.

New IOM Report Highlights PEPFAR's Successes, Calls on Initiative to Intensify Efforts to Enhance Partner Countries' Management of Programs and to Improve Prevention

The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has saved and improved millions of lives worldwide and offered proof that HIV/AIDS services can be effectively delivered on a large scale even in countries with high rates of disease and resource constraints, says a new congressionally mandated evaluation conducted by the Institute of Medicine.

IOM Evaluation of PEPFAR to Release Feb. 20
Released: 2/15/2013
Evaluation of PEPFAR, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, presents the results of an assessment of the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief as requested by Congress in its reauthorization of funding for the initiative in 2008. The report includes recommendations for how PEPFAR and its partner countries can most effectively sustain and advance gains made in preventing and treating the HIV/AIDS epidemic worldwide. Congress will review the initiative later this year.

Countering Fake and Substandard Drugs: IOM Report Releases Feb. 13

As the recent appearance of fake versions of cancer drugs illustrates, the increase in international production and trade of medications has come with an increase in illegitimate or poor-quality drugs reaching patients worldwide. Countering the Problem of Falsified and Substandard Drugs, a new report from the Institute of Medicine, recommends steps to improve the capacity of the United States and other nations to discover fake or subpar products and close gaps that allow products to be falsified or diluted.

Four Winners of App Challenge to Prevent Domestic Violence Announced

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the Avon Foundation for Women today announced the four winners of a global challenge aimed at preventing domestic violence. The contest, "Ending Violence @ Home App Challenge," invited individuals from the fields of domestic violence prevention and communications technologies to combine their skills to raise awareness about violence and help prevent domestic abuse through an original app.

IOM Report on Safety of Imported Foods, Drugs to Be Discussed at Public Briefing
